My Speech

My latest speech for Clubs, Schools etc - October 2007

Speech to Presidents of Rotary, Apex, W.C.A., Primary and High Schools, Universities, and other Educational facilities.
Given whenever the date suits.

Good evening, Mr/Madam President and all the other members and their guests.
I take it as a privilege to be here, talking about water, and the lack of facilities without it.

First I want to fill you in, about my history.

As Principle of the following organizations, I have acted as an independent consultant, on projects of a diverse nature, through many First and Third World countries.

World Reforestation Foundation and Arthur Thompson Associates, Project Managers and Management Consultants. Services provided include Business and Project Planning, Financial Packaging and Whole Project management. Prior to opening my own consultancy I worked for several multinational construction companies in the capacity of Director, International Negotiator and Project Manager on numerous projects, in several countries simultaneously.

Consultancy has been provided to various high profile clients in United Kingdom, South Africa, Swaziland, Malawi, Mozambique, Sudan, South Yemen, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Angola, Madagascar, Australia and U S A, plus smaller assignments around the World on an on-going basis.

Prior to that I studied at the Douglas High School, the Outward Bound Sea School, two years in the Royal Air Force, Liverpool College of Building, and, I C S. I studied as an Associate of the Institute of Quantity Surveyors. At 26 I became a full time Project Manager, which launched my international career.

With the Post Qualification being on Management in Construction, Management for Profit in Construction, Contract Planning & Computers and International Financial Services. I also attended the International Building Research Congress and various other international congresses throughout the years.

My other interests and activities include Travel and Sailing, I have an Offshore Yacht Masters Ticket, I also had a Pilot’s license, I had my Second Class Diving Certificate, from the British Sub   Aqua Club as well.

I have a great interest in all things environmentally friendly. Although I am not a 'Greenie,' I believe development must go ahead, providing it sensibly thought out. Like the trees it's no good planting palm trees in tundra, or planting conifers in desert. One must think it out logically.

As I already mentioned, I am the Founder and Patron of the "World Reforestation Foundation" at the moment, which means I can spend all my time to achieve my objectives.

I would like to fill you in on life before and after my Stroke's, and what is wrong with me. I suffer at various times to times, from, Dysphasia, an impairment of language comprehension formulation and use. In my case it may include difficulty with spelling and arithmetic. Dysphasia is the impaired capacity to program, the position of the speech musculature, and the sequencing of muscular movements for the volitional production of speech. Dysarthria is a collection of motor speech disorders; characterized by muscular weakness and in coordination affecting speech, voice quality, chewing and Swallowing, although chewing and swallowing have improved the more beer I drink? . In addition, I have no feeling in my right hand and my left arm is in constant numbness and pain. Fortunately my legs have got constantly better due to the conscientious attention of my physiotherapists. As I have mentioned elsewhere in this dissertation, there are very many inconveniences. For example I do not taste or very little taste in my lips or my tongue, my left eye is constantly watering, and not to mention the trouble I have wiping my butt, dressing myself, fastening buttons, showering, using utensils and writing, to name but a few. But we are still alive and kicking, for all that.

My wife and I have, and would like to, devote the rest of our lives to the Trees, and their associated environment, plus the native grasses, to encourage the lack of salinity in the soil. This is a practical thing, which looks at the things that will promote the growth of Trees, the Waterways and the Coast.

I would like to thank my wife for being they're, including my fits of temper, for which I apologize, and for keeping me in the manner I have become use to.

And the second thing, I would say is that you may find it monosyllabic, but it's the entire fault with the computer.  They do not make it with my dulcet tone and my innuendo, at this stage, so you will have to exercise some patience. I have to be practical, what I can do and cannot do at the moment is a question of possibility, and not probability. The possibility is endless, look at me, I could not speak French before my stroke, now I cannot speak French, German, Italian, Spanish, English, and numerous other languages as well. However time will tell.

All I want to see is the forest's healthy again. To achieve those ends I would like to promote the Antivap and who knows what I shall uncover with my research. Although, I appreciate, the re-growth of the forests depends as much on the burning off of the bush, but one has to keep a sense of perspective about these things, it's no good covering things which are impracticable.

As I have said in many occasions before?  I am not a "Greenie", but I am looking for what is practical to achieve. To purposely bring about some reforestation, of that what previously had been reverted to desert, would be an achievement.

HOW TO INSTALL YOUR "Antivap".
This is where the "Antivap" comes into its own, for nurturing trees and native grasses and preventing the evaporation from dams respectively. At the moment there seems to be several things coming to mind:
1)      Lack of water,
2)            Salinity,
3)            Improvement of storage facilities for water,
4) The burning of fossil and timber indiscriminately throughout the World,
5) Plus numerous other circumstances.

Antivap
This is my own invention, having thought of it several years ago in Africa. It got accepted by the government of the time, I did not have the money to develop it.
With the modern thinking of governments, things have changed somewhat. With the advent to global warming, becoming what government and industrialists thinking about it, a new energy has come into this. The South African Government, 25 years ago, used to leave it up to the inventors and industrialists to explore new territories of saving water, among other things, to devise methods of sorting out themselves. Whereas the Australian Government realizes their need for R & D, and the usefulness it will have  to the conservation of water in the present and future. They still get to past the bureaucracy, is you efforts to get the Antivap accepted, but at least it is a step in the right direction. At a meeting with the Minister for Water Affairs of the South African Government, I was told that I could have the land, all development that I had subsequently undertaken to make the Antivap acceptable to them, I would be subject to a reinstatement order, if the Antivap was not acceptable to the bureaucracy in any form whatsoever. Having already gone through that, with the "Harrite" Building System, which I also invented on my own, I did not feel like doing it, for a second time. The Minister explained that he and his staff, had devised a methods for covering up trenches of water of rangeing 100 and 1,000 meters in length, with corrugated iron, so as to prevent evaporation.
It was remarkably ineffective.
I had neither resources nor wherewithal, to enter a fight with the Minister, so I lived to fight another day.

Your Antivap consists of an equilateral triangle, of whatever you want to make it.
It is formed to a complex design individually, which in turn interlocks with each other, to form a monolithic design. Made of buoyant material, whose weights are of specific gravity, is less than the weight of water. This then floats on a dam or similar body of water, to prevent evaporation. As the rate of evaporation, varies between 1.5 Meter and 5 Meter per annum, in tropical and even for temperate areas. This accounts for a lot of salinity in the water that accounts in turn for the lack of productivity of the soil in growing the produce that is expected of it. Native grasses can contribute a lot for the decrease salinity that contributes to this fact.
(See: Channel 9. “Sunday”  Australia's Salinity Crisis: What Crisis? May 28, 2006
Reporter : Ross Coulthart, Producer : Nick Farrow)

The ideal dimensions now are a nominal a 1 Meter of equilateral triangle by 150 millimeters high, which allows for ease of handling. Although this does not preclude from making the system any size, you want it to be.  They would be a 50 MM (nominal) gap between it component parts, to ensure the life is maintained. They aggravating it of the water being sufficient to oxides the water in between. A further enhancement of this system that once installed permanent by nature and yet it can be dismantled to be and it can reuse in other locations and for maintenances purposes. One needs to emphasize too severely, with category 5 water restrictions coming in on 2007, the honeymoon is over. Category 5 exist in other parts of Australia, namely Goulburn NSW, to name one. I remember in Durban, in 1977, they had a motto their
“If it yellow let it mellow
If it’s brown flush it down”
  That will come!

Mediterranean Islands are going through a water crisis right now. The desalination plants are not keeping up with the supply, and the precipitation from the rainfall does not compensate for it. Another application typical of the Antivap.

Another situation exists in Ecuador, where there have been mudslides that has been responsible for countless deaths, due to deforestation.
And so the casualties mount.

FUTURE PROJECTS
We are currently developing a range of projects that are specifically targeting at bush fires. What this means to the household market, it goes without saying.
A wise man once said, "The really nice thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, and is not preceded by long periods of worry and depression". I always plan things that happen to me, some with drastic results, some others with spectacular results. Mostly they have been normal, but they have been my responsibility, with the exception of my stroke, which was completely unplanned. Apart from that, I intend to plan things well in advance, which is why I am making a this request for sponsorship at stage of my speech. It will give you a chance to think about it.

PLANNING

1              Personal Goals. I would like to think that I could make a difference to the environment through the World Reforestation Foundation.
2              Antivap. I own the rights myself to manufacture and install the Antivap on behalf the W.R.F. All profits go back to W.R.F. for the maintenance of staff and volunteers that contribute to W.R.F to the W.R.F for achievement of its aims.
3              Power.  The W.R.F considers that electrical power generation has numerous possible sources, some examples are given here:  Geodynamics (Hot rocks), Wind, Solar, Wave power, Tidal, Hydro, Nuclear, Clean coal and various other things, all of these have contributions to make. All have their place in the renewable energy commissioning in all cases of renewable energy resources.  A further thing has come to mind, providing of “Sprinklers” on the Barrier Reef, which defeats the, particular blanching. I have ideas myself on how this will be achieved.
4              Future Research, Offices & House. A house will be planned together with Research Centre and Offices, to share the facilities when they are researching into matters of the World  Reforestation Foundation, a Computer Boffin/Caretaker, would be appointed, to guide visitors through the “Site” to let them know what had been covered. The site has yet to be chosen. Planners are now providing eco-friendly ‘Green’ houses. They are acceptable, with rain water saving, grey water and recycled water,( for particular purposes), wind and solar power, hay insulated, and wind directional located to create a ‘Breeze way’s to obviate the air conditioning. Advertising will, of necessity, need to pay the costs the office, house, car, caravan and the boat. It all depends which agents I pick to represent the World Reforestation Foundation.
5.             Travelling & Housing while in transit. Having spent the last 10 years looking at a caravan and a boat that would serve the purpose of publicizing the W.R.F. I have concluded that the “Duck Flat” wooden boats “Mundoo ‘111’ Cruiser”, Solar powered with electric motor would be ideal. It does all the things which I espouse. It would serve as a caravan when we on land and as a boat whenever we’re afloat. I also want a 4WD, with the hybrid method of propulsion or a diesel, with which I would tow the caravan/boat where ever needed to be to promote the W.R.F. Speeches would be made every where opportunity presents itself, mostly at pre-arranged venues. The more publicity the W.R.F. got the better.
In the mean time, I have identified a boat that is suitable to the purposes, so long as I limit the to South Eastern Queensland, it is a 7.5 long Diesel powered Motor launch, with a cabin for two overnight. World opperations will have to come at a later date.

6              Speeches.  All will have a common theme, being the conservations of the forests, although               aimed at the particular audience, be they Rotary, WCA, Student or whatever. I would employ a               ‘Speech’ writer to make my speeches for me. Time constraints being too numerous to consider   doing it myself. Myself, with Neena and anybody that is necessary,  to make speeches, any place      that is necessary  to get our message across. I would have to get somebody that would co-ordinate                my travelling plans and make sure I was the right place at the right time.
7.Publicity. Using volunteers, TV, Radio, Internet and all published data was necessary to make sure my message getting out there. I also need to cover the D V D market, for the escapees of the markets already covered.
8  Accountant. I should need an Accountant, on a volunteer or 'Pro bono' basis, to get the thing, up and running. The spectrum of people involved will be “environmentally friendly” to promote the  World Reforestation Foundation. A group of companies called 'Viridian,' who experiments with bio-remediation, where they use microbes for the disposals of toxic metals especially, Zinc, Mercury, Arsenic etc. The universities of Birmingham and Dundee are working on it as well. I can see someone coordinating a similar organization, such as him or her. A researcher, working in the field of, "Green House Gasses" and "Detoxified Water", to ensure the future of the Trees.

For those that have the Eco-system at heart, their aim is to have the Trees growing, the Invertebrates, Animal and Fish pro-creating, each one is dependent on the other. It has been expressed, if the invertebrates do not survive, the rest of life as we know it would only have three months to live, all the invertebrates are dependants on the trees in one form or another.

In the mean time another quote.

'We are just drowning ourselves in a sea of our own muck.' Anonymous.

This applies to most countries all over the World, from the Arctic to the Antarctic.

We are destroying our selves of self-generated waste, of our own making. When you take in to account 'manmade' objects, which are currently used as "Landfill" projects, the worlds' surface can never recover as tree bearing land again. Whereas the bio-degradable material, likes vegetable matter, including timber, fish meal and even bodies of dead animals will eventually end up as fertilizer."

The one thing that has, apart from the suffering and death of people all over the world of such things as Aids, Cancer and the needless loss of life due to acts of war and terrorism, that has a great effect on me, is the destruction of the environment, especially the plight of the trees. While numerous "Specialists" are searching for answers to all things, not many except for a bunch of "Greenie's", of which I am definitely not one, is doing something about the forest. Unfortunately often not practical and lacking in co-ordination, but it is par for the course. Why anybody who has an interest in the environment has be a "Greenie", "Socialist" or "Communist" or what ever sort's of "Ist's", to get there. I am a Conservative member of the community, why the hell should I need to have my politics shown, when all I need it to have the "WRF" publicized. One needs to get some order somewhere to be of value to the community as a whole.

I have worked for and consulted to various high profile clients in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia and USA, and many other countries throughout the Middle East and Africa. So I have a good general knowledge of what's happening. Malawi and Zimbabwe had excellent tree Conservation Act's, but it only operated in the urban areas and only applied to non-indigenous races.

The desertification of the wilderness worldwide is another thing to consider. All the uncontrollable burning of the fossil fuel, the advance of the desert proves a constant threat. Thirty years ago it was already advancing into Zimbabwe (previously Rhodesia) at approximately at one kilometer per annum. One can only assume this state exists in other sub-Sahara in desert countries too. I have seen whole villages over come in this way.

Pakistan is the latest place to come with desertification, they have had a three-year drought, and this has left them short of food for the populace. The blame for this comes with the place being denuded of forest, soil erosion and chemical fertilizer, to name a few contributory factors.

The 'Wet Lands' are sustainable by the use of “Antivap”. The existing dams would be equipped with the “Antivap” system. Whereby it will conserve water and so let it feed the downstream, once again rejuvenating the 'Wet Lands' and giving it the chance of survival. One needs some retroaction for the things our predecessors did to the environment. One cannot turn back the clock, it is no use dispensing with the dams, we can even start thinking about more dam's, even about the smaller properties, when you think about the evaporation that occurs, but we can rectify the wrongs as far as it is possible.

A case in point and reported recently, in Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia were having a dispute over water and it's salinity. Apart from the politicians, who seem to have a point-scoring scheme going for them, it seems to me that the welfare of the Country takes first preference over the politicians, which are only a distant 10th in order of preference, in my own view. Which brings me to the point of the “Antivap”. This could go a long way to solving your water and salinity problems.

"Global Witness," an N G O, does sterling work amongst these. Cambodia is a case in point. The country will be logged out in 4 years. Exports are through Thailand and Vietnam, and help to gain some aspect of respectability. The logging concessions gain some respectability through being available through the offices of the Prime Minister, Military Units, Khmer Rouge, some legal some ill-legal operations, perhaps it sounds legal to import those logs to places like the Chelsea Flower Show amongst other things.

El Salvador suffered an earthquake recently because of degraded state of the soil. The cases are endless!

It's about time someone cared.

I have recently learnt in, an abject lesson in reality:
"Never assume".

I have become aware, that because the authorities have become aware in turn, that where there are not enough rules as to the regulation of boats. It seems as if they were lacking rules, about boats, so the bureaucracy got involved, so much for the bureaucracy. That was another area they had become active in. There was a law passed on 1st July 2005, that it was un-lawful to operate a boat, without a totally valid license, of more than in excess of an outboard who's capacity 4.5kw (6hp). That had me in a quandary. I had had a Skippers ticket for off shore cruising, from A Y F, since 1989.

I was to learn a lesson yet. Because I had operated boats all my life, whether one sought or another, I assumed it would be "A piece of cake". What I had not assumed, was that my right hand and arm was not capable of feeling, and my left arm could only feel 70% to 80%, one becomes used to it. With the result I failed the test. I was like an "Elephant learning to knit", when it came to controlling an Outboard with a tiller. So I had to learn again.
I ASSUMED!

It is paying me benefits, in a rather peculiar way since I have done it:
I have difficulty using the telephone. I have a person, usually my wife, too telephone for me, that usually ends up with the other person thinking what I would do, without consulting with me, which leads to very interesting discussions, what I think should happen, and my wife thinks happens, and what the person thinks what is happening, it bears any resemblance to my thoughts, so I have to think carefully about should happen when I apply my mind to something. This leads to interesting discussions, they have no relation to what I am thinking myself, they are the persons interpretation, of what I meant to say, if you know what I mean?
People can be divided into 3 groups:
6              Those who make things happen.
7              Those who watch things happen.
8              And those who wonder what happened.

My Subject is: SHARING & CARING

A lovely story springs to mind.

A little old couple walked slowly into McDonalds that cold winter evening. They looked out of place amid the young families and young couples eating there that night. Some of the customers looked admiringly at them. You could tell what the admirers were thinking.

"Look, there is a couple who has been through a lot together, probably for 60 years or more!"

The little old man walked right up to the cash register, placed his order with no hesitation and then paid for their meal. The couple took a table near the e wall and started taking food off the tray. There was one hamburger, one order of French fries and one drink. The little old man unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half. He placed one half in front of his wife. Then he carefully counted out the French fries, divided them in two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink; his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As the man began to eat his few bites of hamburger the crowd began to get restless. Again you could tell what they were thinking.

"That poor old couple. All they can afford is one meal for the two of them."

As the man began to eat his French fries one young man stood and came over to the old couple's table.
He politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple to eat. The old man replied that they were just fine. They were used to sharing everything. Then the crowd noticed that the little old lady had not eaten a bite. She just sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again the young man came over and begged them to let him buy them something to eat. This time the lady explained that no, they were used to sharing everything together. As the little old man finished eating and was wiping his face neatly with a napkin the young man could stand it no longer. Again he came over to their table and offered to buy some food. After being politely refused again he finally asked a question of the little old lady.

"Ma'am, why aren't you eating? You said that you share everything. What is it that you are waiting for?"

She answered, "The teeth."

Everybody can learn a lesson from this, it is not the teeth we share, but we share the world and everything around us. This amounts to everything.

I would like to say again, if the invertebrates do not survive, the rest of life as we know it would only have three months to live, all the invertebrates are dependent on the trees in one form or another. If we do not look after the trees, who will look after them?

If you want to join the "World Reforestation Foundation" and do your "Bit". The fee's is $25.00, which includes G. S. T. Other things are on offer such as Tee Shirts, Baseball Caps etc.

It has been eleven years since the first stroke, and I have often thought what is the point of it all?
But that is the point, there is not any point in living unless one has a goal, and you aim for it.
You might set a goal; say you want to walk without a stick, having achieved that, now you
need to set another goal for one self. You have always to set goals, it is no good saying I have to do to this or that, you have to write it down, and to yourself to keep reminded of it by reading it daily. I set a goal of owning a sailing boat, I achieved that, unfortunately the boat is to small to undertake the circumnavigation of Australia. I am not there yet, but I am getting there. You can do whatever you do, so long as is a goal.

I was told it would take up to five years to become proficient at speech again, it been twice that long, but I have learnt other methods of communicating. Although I say that, but other people say I am improving all the time. My spelling has improved a lot, so has my dyslexia and my mathematics skills have also. I would like to say something to other stroke victims.

NEVER GIVE UP!

Despite what Professor McCarthy had to say, in my presence, I still have contributions to make. McCarthy said that "He cannot speak", in the presence my wife and I, within six months me having had the stroke. It only self-aggrandizement he justifies his own existence. It is only through the auspices of Dr. Jenny Leathleen and Dr. Kerrin Finch and their Associates and Students; I owe what I am today, plus my wife, Neena, for being there for me whenever I needed her.

I am also a great admirer of Stephen Hawkins's, the cosmic scientist. He has a technique where thought transfers transmit to speech. I should like to know how that works. That is another of my goals. The research it to difficult at this moment, however it will come to me, given time. Maybe someone who has knowledge of this is listening to me now.

 That reminds me!
There was a Doctor who received a patient.
"What is wrong with me", He said.
The Doctor examined him, "You have twenty four hours to live. That is my considered opinion".
"What do I do now", Said the patient.
"Do whatever you want, you only have twenty four hours to live".
"What do I have", said the patient.
"You got M 4", said the Doctor.
To save any suggestion of him being ignorant, he kept quiet. He went to the Pub and had a pint or two. He put his hand in his pocket and found a twenty cent piece, he put it in too the Pokies machine and won $10000.
The manager came to see him and congratulated him, he said, "Get knotted, bugger off".
He put his hand in his pocket and found another twenty cent piece, he put it in too the Pokies machine and won $20000. The manager came to see him and congratulated him again, he said "Get knotted, bugger off".
"What is the matter with you"?
"I got M 4".
"Good lord, you got the meat tray as well".

So you see my point, it is a question of seeing whether the glass is half full or half empty.
To me it will be at least half full all of the time.

I am speaking on behalf of the World Reforestation Foundation, and myself.

I want to explore the possibilities after a stroke.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, and for those who have heard me speak before, I would say again, as Principle of the following organizations, I have acted as an independent consultant, on projects of a diverse nature, through many First and Third World countries.

All though I not a 'Greenie', I believe development must go ahead, providing it sensibly thought out. Like the trees it's no good planting palm trees in tundra, or planting conifers in desert. One must think it out logically.

This is a quote from Ayn Rand. The author of "Atlas Shrugged."
"I swear by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine".
This is the creed I have all ways lived to in the past, so why must I change it. I would recommend any one to live by this, and then all else becomes a bonus

The worst thing is being treated as if you were not there, one of my acquaintances makes a show of being pleased to see me, when I know he is not, and he cannot waste for someone to arrive to take some pressure of himself, at one stage he turned his back to me and carried on a conversation with a woman that he just met at that moment, rather than be caught speaking to me. I would rather he treated me like a normal human being than an oddity. Still it takes all types to make the World, and one has to be tolerant.

You have always to set goals, it is no good saying I have to do to this or that, you have to write it down, and to yourself to keep reminded of it by reading it daily.

I have set a goal to turn our personal liability around. In other words, to make the World Reforestation Foundation is viable, so that it will function as a profitable concern.

It has been eleven years and look what I have achieved, I can drive again, for the last eleven years, I have got used to wearing no socks, so that does not trouble me anymore, I enjoy a social life which by any standards is acceptable, mainly due to my wife, also I have learnt to sail again through "Sailability".  I set a goal of owning a sailing boat on behalf of the World Reforestation Foundation, which is what I did. I am not there yet, but I am getting there.

While wanting to retain the position of "Whole Project Manager", I must also be realistic.  I really only can take a position of photographer or artist, as that is all that I can do now. I will establish some additional projects as they become available. There seems only three immediately, but more will come to mind as I apply my thoughts to them.

The purpose of this Foundation is twofold. Firstly it means I could be gainfully employed again. Secondly my contribution could be worthwhile to society. A contribution would be made to the World Reforestation Foundation of the funds arising from various activities provided.

I still believe in myself. My brain is as good as ever, (I had an I Q of 159). However I have trouble articulating my thoughts to actions occasionally.

For the first month after the second stroke, I did not have any recollection. Slowly it came back to me. For the first two months things were a blur. I recall things like getting up to shower in a wheel chair, like eating porridge on a spoon,  (most of it ending on my bib), and various other stuff of no consequence at this time. I suffered from Dysarthria at one stage, but the swallowing came back the more beer I drank. While I have no feeling in my lips and tongue, it is amazing what satisfaction you get from a simple pleasure.

As most of my stories have been about my circumstances, and me I thought I would rather take the time and talk about a project very near to my heart, namely the "World Reforestation Foundation". This came about some five years ago and was the culmination of me spending the last 47 years of my life on some kind of development or other and as a result of seeing the devastation which resulted from the trees being destroyed in the name of development. When I think of the number of trees that were sacrificed for the sake of development, it makes me shudder.

A group of islands spring to mind, because I recently had some dealings there. Kiribati is a small group of islands about 174 to 177 Degrees East and from 1 to 3 Degrees South. I heard about this through Radio Deutsche Welle. Apparently their breadfruit and coconut palms are under threat of devastation, through warming up of the Earth's temperature by 1/2 Degree in the last ten years or so. This is all due to "Green House Gasses" becoming out of control through the burning of fossil fuel. For instance the industrial nations are uncontrollably burning things like coal, coke, petrol and diesel fuel etc, Indonesia and South America are burning off the forest, plus other situations too numerous to mention. A recent report at hand, says that the great storms raging throughout Europe presently, is attributed to the warming of global temperature during the past ten years.

Kiribati is only an average of 1.825 meters above sea level, so 375 millimeters is a considerable leap. When you consider all there water comes from artesian wells, it will not take a long time for them to increase in salinity a become unsuitable for drinking water and water for nurturing trees. It stands to reason that these countries, and other similar groups of islands, do not have long to survive.

I have numerous possibilities of bringing about my dreams. I could just retire, but that would not be my nature. I would like to promote the "WRF" not just throughout Queensland but internationally as well. I would need some backing, particularly in regards to the Anti Vap, I would need a boat, this could be a weekender and a Four Wheel Drive, if only applied to Queensland or a live aboard boat should it come to that.

If you have any questions, I have attempted to anticipate the answer, for any other questions I will need time to compile my answers through my computer, so please be patient with me.

I also would like to promote "Stem Cell Therapy." Enlisting all from the Stroke Victims, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease and Paraplegic. By the means of promoting Rod Laver, (Stroke), Michael J Fox Jr., (Parkinson's Disease), Christopher Rieves (Paraplegic, since deceased,) and whoever wants to promote in making a cure available to you or your patients, and others like you.

I would like for all to support me and to promote me and make sure I get the right agent. For all you need to say it would get a lot of publicity for your, and related causes. All you need to do, you would get my name around the World as the "Champion for All the People That Can Not Communicate" and "World Reforestation Foundation", and the rest will do itself. I believe with a concerted effort, it would be much different than any one paddling their own canoe. Will there be any people of the media there? I could do with an introduction to them. To let them get to know what's, "Stem Cell Therapy" and the "World Reforestation Foundation", is all about.  What is the use of living, without something left to live for!  After all, I need to be playing rugby at the end of this decade.

We have got the ex-President Of United States on our side, so what more do you want? With that it’s a breeze.

You will note certain references to this in my speech.

I, in my modest own way, believe, that it to late to come to of the World. Providing all the methods I have endorsed, plus numerous others which I have heard yet, are taking into account when considering this.

Once again, thank you for listening to me; I hope this diatribe exercises some thoughts on your behalf.
A final quotation in ending.

"God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things, right now I am so far behind, I will never die."

World Reforestation - My Story by Arthur Thompson

I am speaking on behalf of the World Reforestation Foundation, and myself.

I want to explore the possibilities after a stroke and promote the World Reforestation Foundation and Stem Cell Therapy.

Prior to opening my own consultancy I worked for several multi national construction companies in the capacity of Director, International Negotiator and Project Manager on numerous projects, in several countries simultaneously.

I studied as an Associate of the Institute of Quantity Surveyors . At 26 I became a full time Project Manager, which launched my international career.

I took Post Qualification courses in Management in Construction, Management for Profit in Construction, Contract Planning & Computers and International Financial Services. I also attended the International Building Research Congress and various other international congresses throughout the years.

My other interests and activities include Travel and Sailing, I have an Offshore Yacht Masters Ticket, I also had a Pilots license and I had my Second Class Diving Certificate, from the British Sub Aqua Club as well.

I have a great interest in all things environmentally friendly. Although I am not a 'Greenie,' I believe development must go ahead, providing it is sensibly thought out. With the trees it's no good planting palm trees in tundra, or planting conifers in desert. One must think it out logically.

I am the Founder and Patron of the "World Reforestation Foundation" at the moment, which means I can spend all my time to achieve my objectives.

I would like to fill you in on life before and after my Strokes, and what is wrong with me. I suffer at various times, from Dysphasia, an impairment of language comprehension formulation and use. In my case it may include difficulty with spelling and arithmetic. Dysphasia is the impaired capacity to program the position of the speech musculature, and the sequencing of muscular movements for the volitional production of speech. Dysarthria is a collection of motor speech disorders; characterized by muscular weakness and in coordination affecting speech, voice quality, chewing and swallowing, although the chewing and swallowing have improved, the more beer I drink! In addition, I have no feeling in my right hand and my left arm is in constant numbness and pain. Fortunately my legs have got constantly better due to the conscientious attention of my physiotherapists.

It has been nine years since my first stroke, and I have often thought what is the point of it all?

But that is the point, there is not any point in living unless one has a goal, and you aim for it.

You might set a goal; say you want to walk without a stick, having achieved that, now you

need to set another goal for one self. You have always to set goals, it is no good saying I have to do to this or that, you have to write it down your self and read it daily to keep reminded of it. I set a goal of owning a sailing boat, I achieved that, but unfortunately my boat is too small to undertake the circumnavigation of Australia that I want to do to promote World Reforestation. I am not there yet, but I am getting there. You can do what ever you want to, so long as is a goal.

I was told it would take up to five years to become proficient at speech again. It has been twice that long, but I have learnt other methods of communicating. Although I say that, other people say I am improving all the time. My spelling has improved a lot, so has my dyslexia and my mathematics skills have also.

I would like to say something to other stroke victims.

NEVER GIVE UP!

Despite what Professor McCarthy had to say, in my presence, I still have contributions to make. McCarthy said that "He can not speak", in the presence my wife and I, within six months of me having had the stroke. It only self-aggrandizement he justifies his own existence. It is only through the auspices of Dr. Jenny Leathleen and Dr. Kerrin Finch and their Associates and Students; I owe what I am to day, plus my wife, Neena, for being there for me when ever I needed her.

As I have mentioned, there are very many inconveniences. For example I do not taste or taste very little on my lips or my tongue, my left eye is constantly watering, and not to mention the trouble I have wiping my butt, dressing myself, fastening buttons, showering, using utensils and writing, to name but a few. But we are still alive and kicking, for all that.

The worst thing is being treated as if you where not there. One of my acquaintances makes a show of being pleased to see me, when I know he is not, and he can not wait for someone to arrive to take some pressure of himself. At one stage he turned his back to me and carried on a conversation with a woman that he just met at that moment, rather than be caught speaking to me. I would rather he treated me like a normal human being than an oddity. Still it takes all types to make the World, and one has to be tolerant.

I still believe in myself. My brain is as good as ever, (I had an I Q of 159). However I have trouble articulating my thoughts to actions occasionally.

It has been nine years and look what I have achieved! For the last five years, I have been able to drive again. I have got used to wearing no socks, so that does not trouble me any more. I enjoy a social life which by any standards is acceptable, mainly due to my wife, also I have learnt to sail again through "Sailability". I set a goal of owning a sailing boat on behalf of the World Reforestation Foundation, which is what I did. I am not there yet, but I am getting there.

That reminds me!

There was a Doctor who received a patient.

"What is wrong with me", He said.

The Doctor examined him, "You have twenty four hours to live. That is my considered opinion".

"What do I do now", Said the patient.

"Do what ever you want, you only have twenty four hours to live".

To me it will be at least half full, all of the time.

I am also a great admirer of Stephen Hawkins's, the cosmic scientist. He has a technique where thought transfers transmit to speech. I should like to know how that works. That is another of my goals. The research it too difficult at this moment, however it will come to me, given time. Maybe some one who has knowledge of this is listening to me now.

In the meantime am very grateful for the "ReadPlease PLUS" computer software, which has given me much joy and pleasure, and the facility to read the speech I am giving to you today. I would say that you may find it monosyllabic, but it's entirely the fault with the computer. They do not make it with my dulcet tone and my innuendo, at this stage, so you will have to exercise some patience. I have to be practical; what I can do and cannot do at the moment is a question of possibility, and not probability. The possibility is endless, look at me, I could not speak French before my stroke, now I cannot speak French, German, Italian, Spanish, English, and numerous other languages as well. However time will tell.

A wise man once said, "The really nice thing about not planning, is that failure comes as a complete surprise, and is not preceded by long periods of worry and depression". I always plan things that happen to me, some with drastic results, some others with spectacular results. Mostly they have been normal, but they have been my responsibility, with the exception of my stroke, which was completely unplanned. Apart from that, I intend to plan things well in advance.

I have recently learnt an abject lesson in reality:

"Never assume".

I have become aware, that the authorities have become aware, that there are not enough rules as to the regulation of boats. It seems as if they were lacking with regulations about boats, so the bureaucracy got involved, so much for the bureaucracy. That was another area they had become active in. Their was a law passed on 1st July 2005 , that it was un-lawful to operate a boat, without a totally valid license, of with an outboard of 4.5kw (6hp) or more. That had me in a quandary. I had had a Skippers ticket for off shore cruising, from A Y F, since 1989.

I was to learn a lesson yet. Because I had operated boats all my life, whether one sort or another, I assumed it would be "A piece of cake". What I had not assumed, was that my right hand and arm was not capable of feeling, and my left arm could only feel 70% to 80%. One becomes used to it. With the result I failed the test. I was like an "Elephant learning to knit", when it came to controlling an Outboard with a tiller. So I had to learn again, I have yet to take my second test in a forward control boat with a hand throttle that I could control.

I ASSUMED!

It is paying me benefits, in a rather peculiar way since I have learned it:

I have difficulty using the telephone. I have a person, usually my wife, to telephone for me. That usually ends up with the other person thinking what I would want to do, without consulting with me, which leads to very interesting discussions. What I think should happen, and what my wife thinks happens, and what the person thinks that is happening, it bears little resemblance to my thoughts. This leads to interesting discussions, they have no relation to what I am thinking my self, they are the persons interpretation, of what I meant to say, if you know what I mean?

People can be divided into 3 groups:

  1. Those who make things happen.
  2. Those who watch things happen.
  3. And those who wonder what happened.

As most of my stories have been about my circumstances, and me I thought I would rather take the time and talk about a project very near to my heart, namely the "World Reforestation Foundation".

My wife and I have, and would like to, devote the rest of our lives to the Trees, and their associated environment. This is a practical task, which looks at the things that will promote the growth of Trees, the Waterways and the Coast.

All I want to see is the forests healthy again. To achieve those ends I would like to promote the Antivap and Eco Bag and who knows what I shall uncover with my research. At the moment I am working on a device that prevents bush fires from forming. Although, I appreciate, the re-growth of the forests depends as much on the burning off of the bush, one has to keep a sense of perspective about these things. It's no good covering things which are impracticable.

World Reforestation Foundation came about some five years ago and was the culmination of me spending the last 47 years of my life on some kind of development or other and as a result of seeing the devastation which resulted from the trees being destroyed in the name of development. When I think of the number of trees that where sacrificed for the sake of development, it makes me shudder.

All though I am not a 'Greenie', I believe development must go ahead, providing it is sensibly thought out. Like with the trees, it's no good planting palm trees in tundra, or planting conifers in desert. One must think it out logically.

You have always to set goals, it is no good saying I have to do to this or that, you have to write it down, and say it to your self to keep reminded of it by reading it daily.

I have set a goal to turn our personal liability around. In other words, to make the World Reforestation Foundation viable, so that it will function as a profitable concern.

This is a request. I need some sponsorship. I have invented the "Antivap" which is used for preventing the evaporation from dams. I also have the rights to market the "Eco-Bag", used for nurturing trees. I need some help to get these products known and marketed. I mention this at this stage, to give you a chance to think about it.

At the moment several environmental problems coming to mind:

1)  Lack of water,

2) Salinity,

3) Improvement of storage facilities for water,

4)  The burning of fossil and timber indiscriminately throughout the World,

5)  and numerous other circumstances.

As I have I said, on many occasions before, I am not a "Greenie", but I am looking for what is practical to achieve. To purposely bring about some reforestation, of that which has previously been reverted to desert, would be an achievement.

The "Antivap" is my own invention, having thought of it several years ago in Africa . It got accepted by the government of the time, I did not have the money to develop it.

With the modern thinking of governments, things have changed somewhat. With the advent to global warming, becoming what government and industrialists have been thinking about, a new energy has come into this. The South African Government, 20 years ago, used to leave it up to the inventors and industrialists to explore new territories of saving water, among other things, and to devise methods of sorting out these problems themselves. Whereas the Australian Government realizes their need for Research and Development, and the usefulness it will have the for the conservation of water in the present and future. They still get to pass the bureaucracy, in you efforts to get the Anti vap accepted, but at least it is a step in the right direction.

At a meeting with the Minister for Water Affairs of the South African Government, I was told that I could have the land, all development that I had subsequently undertaken to make the Antivap acceptable to them, would be to subject to a reinstatement order, if the Anti vap was not acceptable to the bureaucracy in any form whatsoever. Having already gone through that, with "Harrite" Building System, which I also invented on my own, I did not feel like going through it for a second time. The Minister explained that he and his staff, had devised a method for covering up trenches of water of several 100 or 1,000 meters in length, with corrugated iron, so as to prevent evaporation, it was remarkably ineffective. I had neither the resources nor the wherewithal, to enter a fight with the Minister, so I lived to fight another day.

The Anti vap

The Anti vap consists of an equilateral triangle, of what ever you want to make it.

It is formed to a complex design which interlocks with each other, like a jig saw, to form a monolithic design. It is made of a buoyant material, whose weight is of a specific gravity less than the weight of water. This interlocking mat then floats on a dam or similar body of water, to prevent evaporation. As the rate of evaporation, varies between 1.5 Meter and 3 Meter per annum, in tropical and even temperate areas, this causes high salinity in the water that in turn accounts for the lack of productivity of the surrounding soil in growing the produce that is expected of it.

The ideal dimensions now are a nominal a 1 Metre of equilateral triangle by 150 millimetres high, which allows for ease of handling. Although this does not preclude from making the system any size, you want it to be. There would be a nominal 50 MM gap between its component parts, allowing gas exchange to ensure that life is maintained. This also agitates the water sufficiently to oxidize the water in between each component part.

The Eco Bag

The ECO BAG is placed around the tree or plant in a level shallow depression. It has a screw off cap to fill the bag with water from a hose, watering can or bucket and funnel. Bend the end of the wick down to start the water flow. An ingenious system controls the drip flow and keeps the wick at the correct height for capillary attraction of the water, as the bag empties. The optimum flow is 1 drip every 15 seconds. This setting will deliver about 1 litre of water per day. Refilling is normally required every 3 to 4 weeks.

Cover the "Eco Bag" with wood chips or light mulch to protect the bag from vermin.

As well as watering, the ECO BAG will stop weeds and evaporation. It will insulate and mulch the ground, encouraging earthworms and beneficial soil microbes to congregate.

With care, the ECO BAG will last 5 to 6 years. Each U.V. treated, "Eco Bag" is made from laminated long lasting sunlight resistant fabric and will establish more than one healthy tree. Most young trees will benefit from a recommended soluble fertilizer added to the water.

If punctured, the "Eco Bag" is easily patched with PVC adhesive available from most hardware shops.

AUSTRALIAN PATENT Number. 637368.

WORLD WIDE PATENTS AND DESIGNS PENDING.

ECO BAG IS A REGISTERED TRADE MARK OF ECOBAG , INDUSTRIES.

There is a group of companies called 'Viridian,' who experiments with bio-remediation, where they use microbes for the disposals of toxic metals especially, Zinc, Mercury, Arsenic etc. The universities of Birmingham and Dundee are working on it as well. I can see someone coordinating a similar organization, a researcher, working in the field of, "Green House Gasses" and "Detoxified Water", to ensure the future of the Trees.

For those that have the Eco-system at heart, their aim is to have both the Trees growing, and the Invertebrates, Animal and Fish pro-creating. Each one is dependent on the other. It has been expressed that, because of the food chain effect, if the invertebrates do not survive, the rest of life as we know it would only have three months to live. All the invertebrates are dependant on the trees in one form or another.

Now, another quote.

'We are just drowning ourselves in a sea of our own muck.' Anonymous.

This applies to most countries all over the World, from the Arctic to the Antarctic.

We are destroying our selves with self-generated waste, of our own making. When you take into account 'manmade' objects, which are currently used as "Landfill" projects, the worlds' surface can never recover as tree bearing land again. Whereas bio-degradable material, like vegetable matter, including timber, fish meal and even bodies of dead animals will eventually end up as fertilizer."

The one thing that has, apart from the suffering and death of people all over the world from such things as Aids, Cancer and the needless loss of life due to acts of war and terrorism, that has a great effect on me, is the destruction of the environment, especially the plight of the trees. While numerous "Specialists" are searching for answers to all things, not many except for a bunch of "Greenie's", of which I am definitely not one, are doing something about the forest. Unfortunately their efforts are often not practical and lacking in co-ordination, but it is par for the course. Why is it that anybody who has an interest in the environment has to be a "Greenie", "Socialist" or "Communist" or what ever sort's of "ists", to get there? I am a Conservative member of the community, why the hell should I need to have my politics shown, when all I need is to have the "World Reforestation Foundation" promoted and publicized. One needs to get some order somewhere to be of value to the community as a whole.

I have worked for and consulted to various high profile clients in the United Kingdom , South Africa , Australia and USA , and many other countries throughout the Middle East and Africa .

Thirty years ago it was already advancing into Zimbabwe (previously Rhodesia ) at approximately at one kilometre per year. One can only assume this state exists in other sub-Saharan desert countries too. I have seen whole villages over come in this way.

Pakistan is the latest place to come with desertification. They have had a three-year drought, and this has left them short of food for the populace. The blame for this comes with the place being denuded of forest, soil erosion and chemical fertilizer, to name a few contributory factors.

The 'Wet Lands' are sustainable by the use of "Antivap". The existing dams would be equipped with the "Antivap" system. Whereby it will conserve water and so let it feed the down streams, once again rejuvenating the 'Wet Lands' and giving it the chance of survival. One needs some retroaction for the things our predecessors did to the environment. One can not turn back the clock, it is no use dispensing with the dams. We can even start thinking about more dam's, even about the smaller properties, when you think about the evaporation that occurs. We must rectify the wrongs as far as it is possible.

The Mediterranean Islands are going through a water crisis right now. The desalination plants are not keeping up with the supply, and the precipitation from the rainfall does not compensate for it.

Another situation exists in Ecuador , where there have been mudslides that have been responsible for countless deaths, all due to deforestation.

And so the casualties mount.

"Global Witness," a non Government organisation, does sterling work exposing these problems. Cambodia is a case in point. The country will be logged out in 4 years. Exports are through Thailand and Vietnam , and help to gain some aspect of respectability. The logging concessions gain some respectability through being available through the offices of the Prime Minister, Military Units, Khmer Rouge, some legal some ill-legal operations. Perhaps it sounds legal to import those logs to places like the Chelsea Flower Show amongst other things.

Kiribati is only an average of 1.825 meters above sea level, so 375 millimetres is a considerable leap. When you consider all their water comes from artesian wells, it will not take a long time for them to increase in salinity a become unsuitable for drinking water and water for nurturing trees. It stands to reason that these countries, and other similar groups of islands, do not have long to survive.

El Salvador suffered an earthquake recently because of degraded state of the soil. The cases are endless!

A case in point and reported recently, in Australia . New South Wales , Victoria and South Australia were having a dispute over water and its salinity. Apart from the politicians, who seem to have a point-scoring scheme going for them, it seems to me that the welfare of the Country takes first preference over the politicians, which are only a distant 10th in order of preference, in my own view. Which brings me to the point: The "Antivap" could go long way to solving our water and salinity problems. I need someone to develop and market my invention.

It's about time someone cared.

I have numerous possibilities of bringing about my dreams. I could just retire, but that would not be my nature. I need some backing, particularly in regards to marketing the Anti Vap.

I would like to promote the World Reforestation Foundation not just through out Queensland but internationally as well. For this I would need a boat, this could be a weekender, and a Four Wheel Drive, if only applied to Queensland or a live aboard boat should it come to circumnavigating Australia. Please see more about this on my website www.worldreforestation.org.

I also would like to promote "Stem Cell Therapy" which has enormous potential benefits for Stroke Victims, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease and Paraplegics, by the means of promoting Rod Laver, (Stroke), Michael J Fox Jr., (Parkinson's Disease), Christopher Rieves (Paraplegic, since deceased,) and who ever wants to promote the making of a cure available to you or your patients, and others like you.

I would like for all to support me, and to promote me and make sure I get the right agent. For all you need to say it would get a lot of publicity for your, and related causes. All you need to do, is to get my name around the World as the "Champion for All the People That Can Not Communicate" and "World Reforestation Foundation", to let them get to know what, "Stem Cell Therapy" and the "World Reforestation Foundation", is all about, and the rest will do itself. I believe with a concerted effort, it would be much more effective than any one person paddling their own canoe. If there are any people from the media here, or an agent that could assist me, I could do with an introduction to them!

What is the use of living, without some thing left to live for! After all, I need to be playing rugby at the end of this decade.

I would like to say again, if the invertebrates do not survive, the rest of life as we know it would only have three months to live, all the invertebrates are dependant on the trees in one form or another. If we do not look after the trees, who will look after them?

We have got the ex-President, Bill Clinton, of United States on our side, so what more do you want? With that it's a breeze.

If you want to join the "World Reforestation Foundation" and support my causes there will be a member at the entrance waiting to take your contribution.

If you have any questions, I have attempted to anticipate the answer, for any other questions I will need time to compile my answers through my computer, so please be patient with me.

Once again, thank you for listening to me; I hope this diatribe exercises some thoughts on your behalf.

A final quotation in ending.

"God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things, right now I am so far behind, I will never die."
